Recognizing & appreciating our oneness with Nature
It is a rough road that leads to the heights of greatness.
The colour is so vibrant and rich. The effort an artist needs to commit to get those expressions must be quite a bit. Do they train as kids? Beautiful photography!

It is something they inherit, I would say …
Theyyam is performed by certain communities and each Theyyam is unique in terms of the facial paining patterns, it’s attire, ornaments and even the story behind it. (there are around one thousand different ones being performed every year in North Kerala).
The whole family travel with the men who performs it to the sacred groves and temples and stays with them. For kids, they learn from being part of the whole process from very early childhood itself.
The stories behind Theyyam is also passed on to new generations orally.
For someone like me, who was born and raised in this Theyyam heartland, though not belongs to this community, it’s something more spiritual than art …
Thank you so much for stopping by and sharing your thoughts 🙂

Thank you so much, Sarmistha 🙂
This Theyyam ritual happens only once in three years and it’s so hard to get anywhere close to it as the crowd is truly maddening.
Sorry, I missed many a comments in the mean time 🙂
