WPC: Mirror, The Hidden Personality

Let me take this week’s theme “Mirror” literally…

Hidden Personality-1

I shot this photo some 7-8 years back at a really interesting place in South India, called Rameshwaram

The place is known for it’s unique landscape, historic and mythological significance.

Being a small island there is no shortage of seashells here and the local community makes a living by selling craft items made out of it.

But the place has a tragic past, once a flourishing tourist and pilgrimage town, it was razed to ground by a devastating cyclone and the associated tidal waves in 1964. Now, no one lives here …

Weekly Photo Challenge: Walls, Tanjavur Wall Painting

The Big Temple of Tanjavur is a world of it’s own…

We have to use superlative degree for anything that’s associated with this architectural marvel which turned 1000 years old in 2010.

I am restricting this post to something special, on the inside ‘Walls’ of this temple complex, the world renowned Tanjavur painting

Weekly Photo Challenge: Work of Art (Thanjavur Palace)

Trying to interpret the theme and selecting a fitting image from archives, took more time than usual, here issue was with options 🙂

If you ever happens to travel in the temple state of Tamil Nadu, you won’t come back empty handed, but with a bucket full of incredible images from the temples and palaces.

Let me share a few images taken during our visit to Thanjavur palace and museum.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Monument (Big temple of Tanjavur)

The big temple of Tanjavur in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu is an architectural marvel and an epitome of art and stone work.

You will be just amazed by the sheer size of this temple and will become speechless when the guide let you know that how a 60 tonne single piece “Kumbham”(top most piece) carved out of granite was erected on top of the 66 meter high tower.

And what would you say when you hear that all this been done a 1000 year back( completed in AD1010) ?

Let me share a few images of this super monument as part of the weekly challenge

This temple is quite famous for the wall paintings, which are more than 400 years old. Most of the images are from the Hindu epics.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Monument, Velankanni Church

The church of “Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health” is one of the most revered churches of India.

Situated in the small beach front town of Velankanni in the south India state of Tamil Nadu, this beautiful monument is visited by millions every year.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Reflections

Ooty is a hill station in South India with beautiful gardens and tea plantations. We reached the Ooty boat house a bit late during our last tour but were treated with a great sunset.

The reflections of the boats and sky were really stunning but light was fading. Here I had to use long exposure and the image is not that sharp.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Abandoned

Dhanushkodi is the tip point of a narrow stretch of land that extends to sea almost connecting Sri Lanka and India.

It was a small fishing town bustling with activity till 1964, when a cyclone hit it so hard that the entire town was wiped off including a train carrying around 100 passengers.

Now it looks like a ghost town with hardly any activity. Let me share a couple of images here, one was an old church and the other is a long abandoned fishing boat.
